The Bali day out
If you’ve only got one day, start here.
The Bali full-day travellers fly in for. Volcano sunrise or boat to the islands, Kuta by lunch, sunset on the cliffs.
The classics
Bali’s Most Popular Day Tours
Nusa Penida boats, Mount Batur sunrises, Ubud monkey forests, Uluwatu sunsets. The days that anchor a Bali trip.
The Bali day
Pick your day, by when it starts.
Bali rewards the early start and the late finish. Up at 2am for Mount Batur’s sunrise. Out on the boat by noon for Nusa Penida. On the cliffs at Uluwatu for the sunset Kecak and the long Indian Ocean evening south.
Up before dawn
Volcano summits, the breakfast on the rim.Mount Batur's pre-dawn trek, breakfast at the summit as the sun comes up over Lombok, hot springs below the volcano, back to Kuta by lunch.
Out on the water
Boats, snorkeling, the off-shore island day.Nusa Penida day trips, Manta Bay snorkeling, Kelingking Beach from the rim, Blue Lagoon reef stops, the boat crossings home before dusk.
When the light changes
Cliff temples, dinner cruises, the long Bali evening.Uluwatu's Kecak fire dance over the surf. Bali Hai cruises off Tanjung Benoa. Jimbaran seafood after. The sun going down hard.
Only in Bali
Three things you can’t do anywhere else.
Sunsets and snorkeling are everywhere. These three aren’t. Each one was born here, or only exists here, or stacks layers of Bali geography on top of each other in a way no other coastline does. Worth planning the trip around.
Born in Bali
The Kecak Fire Dance
On the cliffs of Uluwatu Temple, sixty men in a circle chant cak cak cak while the sun drops into the Indian Ocean. The dance was adapted from the Sanghyang trance ritual in the 1930s — only ever performed in Bali. The setting does the rest: an 11th-century sea temple on an 80-metre drop, the surf below, the smoke from the fire-pit.

Volcano + hot spring
Mount Batur Before Dawn
Up at 2am, head torches on, two hours up the trail. Breakfast on the rim as the sun comes up over Lombok across the strait. Then down to natural hot springs heated by the same volcano you just climbed. It exists because Bali is small enough that the geology stacks on top of itself.

Year-round mantas
Manta Bay, Nusa Penida
A 45-minute boat from the Bali mainland, Manta Bay has a resident population of reef manta rays — Mobula alfredi — that visit cleaning stations on the same reef every day. Most manta sightings in the world are seasonal or chance encounters. Here you snorkel out and they pass underneath you.
